Renewal of full AAALAC accreditation

GAITHERSBURG, MD, USA – Smithers Avanza, a contract research organization (CRO) supporting the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, announced that it has been granted a renewal of full accreditation from the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) International Council on Accreditation. This renewal comes with no recommendations for improvement from AAALAC International.

The AAALAC International accreditation program evaluates organizations that use animals in research. Accreditation follows an extensive internal review along with an on-site assessment. Accredited organizations are re-evaluated every three years.

“The Council commends (Smithers Avanza) for providing and maintaining an exemplary program of laboratory animal care and use. Especially noteworthy were the strong institutional support; the knowledgeable and engaged staff; the excellent husbandry and sanitation program; the well managed and documented veterinary care program; the comprehensive environmental enrichment program; and the well maintained physical plant,” noted the AAALAC International Council on Accreditation in a letter to Smithers Avanza.

AAALAC accreditation benefits research organizations and the animals in their care in a variety of ways and works to help raise the global benchmark for animal well-being in science.

Animal welfare is paramount at Smithers Avanza and we have dedicated ourselves to building a vivarium team that maintains high standards for the well-being of the animals in our care,” said Michael Dorato, Ph.D., DABT, Fellow ATS, Executive Vice President-Toxicology Services, Smithers Avanza. “It is an honor and a validation of our hard work to accept this renewal of accreditation from AAALAC with no recommendations for improvement and we thank them for their diligence in evaluating our program.”
